Raggedy Trees

Raggedy Trees

As part of my materials kit for my ‘This is Tomorrow Project’ I constructed 16 x 2m lengths of dyed recycled flag bunting. The intention is to mark make, paint and draw on each one over Zoom. When lockdown lifts we can come together as a group and bind our raggedy flags together in celebration. The 2m length, a creative take on our now mandatory ritual distance.

Inspired by previously researched rag trees/prayer flags/clootie trees are a Celtic Tradition offering cures and protection. On a bright and breezy day I installed them in the garden and got great joy from their animated movement and sound in the wind.

(Bias) Binding, masking (tape) , bandage (plaster of paris), vasoline (release) protects skin …….. each one of these material component in the kits strives to mind, care and protect. An observation that only became apparent to me on packing up the bags.

Kits all bagged up to be sent out to project participants.
